11.1 - Foundations of the Christian Faith
Unit 11 of this online course on the Foundation of the Christian Faith is titled “Concerning Sacraments,” and in this unit, we will explore the concept of sacraments in Christianity. We will begin by defining what a sacrament is and how it should be received. Then, we will look at the sacraments that were ordained by Christ and whether there are other sacraments. We will focus specifically on Baptism, examining its outward and visible sign as well as the inward and spiritual grace given. Finally, we will discuss what is required of a person when they come to be baptized and what signs of the Holy Spirit’s work they should hope to see. Through this unit, you will gain a deeper understanding of the role of sacraments in Christian faith and practice.
About the Sacrament: A sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. God gives us the sign as a means by which we receive that grace and as a tangible assurance that we do, in fact, receive it. We should receive the sacraments by faith in Christ, with repentance and thanksgiving. Faith in Christ is necessary to receive the grace of the sacraments, and obedience to Christ is necessary for the benefits of the sacraments to bear fruit in our lives.
The Sacraments of the Gospel: Baptism and Holy Communion (also called the Lord’s Supper or the Holy Eucharist) are the two sacraments ordained by Christ that are generally necessary for salvation. These two sacraments were instituted by Christ himself.
The Sacraments of the Church: These sacraments differ from the sacraments of the Gospel in that they were not initiated by Christ during his earthly ministry but were rather developed by the church over time. These rites include confirmation, ordination to ministry, marriage, absolution, and the anointing of the sick. These are all established in the New Testament: James speaks of anointing the sick, Paul speaks about marriage and ordination to the ministry, and the Gospel writers speak of forgiving sin. Although many churches do not accept all of these rites, they still acknowledge marriage as a holy act, ordination as a means of separating out those called to serve the church, and we regularly anoint the sick with oil. There is more here that unites us than what separates us.
Faith is required to access the grace represented in the sacrament. If we come to the Lord’s Table, for example, believing that we are just receiving bread and wine, then we get nothing more than bread and wine. But if we come to the Table believing that the bread and the wine are--by some great mystery--the body and blood of the Lord Jesus, then we receive a heavenly grace unparalleled in our earthly experience. The sacraments operate by faith. In an earlier unit, we learned that the spiritual gifts operate by faith in just the same manner. So, if you are trying to figure out how these things work, you are probably bypassing the required faith to make the sacrament active for you in favor of an intellectual (even scientific) understanding of the miraculous. Just relax, believe, and come in faith. God will do the rest if you only believe. Jesus said, “all things are possible to him who believes” (Mark 9:23).

Genesis 17:1– 21
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: 4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” 9 And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” 15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!” 19 Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”
John 6:53–58
53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. 1 Corinthians 11:27–32
27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

Luke 22:14–20
14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

2 Corinthians 1:21–22
21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
