3.2 - Foundations of the Christian Faith
We call God “Creator” because he made all things. The first verse of the Old Testament declares, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). So, God creates and sustains all things through his Word and gives life to all creatures through his Spirit. Speaking of Jesus, Paul declares the following concerning the creation: “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell” (Colossians 1:16-19).
Recognizing God as Creator informs our understanding of his creation in positive ways. We acknowledge that God created for his own glory everything that exists. He created human beings, male and female, in his image and appointed us stewards of creation. God’s creation is thus a gift to enjoy as we work and care for it.
The world that God created was good. The scriptures tell us that God created all things and called them “very good” (Genesis 1:31). However, through sin, evil and death have come into the world and corrupted it. However, there is coming a time when creation itself will be made new. In Romans, Paul tells us, “For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Romans 8:22-23).
In a like manner, the first humans were also created good. However, Adam and Eve rebelled against God, which brought upon all humanity pain, toil, alienation from God and each other, and death. We have inherited this fallen and corrupted human nature; consequently, we, too, sin and fall short of God’s glory. And the consequences of sin are dire. Because of sin, humanity (apart from Christ) is spiritually dead, separated from God, under his righteous condemnation, and without hope. This harkens back to the fallen “condition of humanity” in an earlier lesson.

CHAPTER TWO
1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
