The Historical Context for Jesus’ Suffering

Both the scriptures and the Apostles’ Creed make clear that Jesus’ life and death were real events that occurred at a particular time and place in Judea in the first century AD. For that reason, these texts reference the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. These are no mere allegorical tales. The biblical accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection are historical facts embedded in the annals of history.
Jesus was executed as a common criminal. He was scourged, mocked, and nailed to a Cross outside the walls of Jerusalem. Though humanly a miscarriage of justice, his execution fulfilled God’s plan of salvation. Indeed, had Satan and his horde of demons understood what Jesus’ death was about to accomplish, they would have done their best to stop the crucifixion. In writing to the church at Colossae, Paul tells us that Christ “disarmed principalities and powers” and “made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them” (Colossians 2:15).
Jesus bore our sins and died the death that we deserved so that we could be saved from sin and eternal condemnation and be reconciled to God. Jesus fulfilled the Scriptures by dying on the Cross as a sacrifice for sin in obedience to his Father. He thereby showed the depth of the love of God for his fallen creation, satisfying the justice of God on our behalf and breaking the power of sin, Satan, and death.

Psalm 2:1–6
1 Why do the nations rage,

And cast away Their cords from us.”4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;

Luke 3:1–2

Psalm 22:1–21

Leviticus 23:18–21
18 And you shall offer with the bread seven lambs of the first year, without blemish, one young bull, and two rams. They shall be as a burnt offering to the Lord, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord. 19 Then you shall sacrifice one kid of the goats as a sin offering, and two male lambs of the first year as a sacrifice of a peace offering. 20 The priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits as a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs. Psalm 34:15–22

2 Corinthians 5:17–21
