The Resurrection of the Body
10.3 - Foundations of the Christian Faith
You should know that there is a coming resurrection of our physical bodies at the end of the age. When the risen Lord Jesus returns to judge the earth, He will raise all the dead to bodily life. The wicked will then receive eternal condemnation and the righteous eternal life in the glory of God. The resurrected bodies of believers will be fully renewed and glorified in the image of Christ, perfected after the manner of his own resurrected and ascended body. This is not a minor piece of theology. It’s the endgame for the whole of history.
Many Christians have been taught that their souls go to heaven when they die and that they will reside in this spiritual abode for the rest of eternity, together with Jesus and all the saints. This is, however, a widely believed fairytale. According to scripture, going to heaven is not the endgame at all. God has a much more glorious plan for His saints than just playing the harp on a cloud for eternity. God will bring heaven to earth at the end of the age, and we will be given glorified bodies, just like the Lord Jesus, and we will live eternally on the earth once it has been made “new.”
Peter tells us, “According to His promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). If you grew up in one of the traditional church denominations, you probably heard a reference to this in the liturgy. “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen” (”Gloria Patri”). The world without end is a physical experience, not a spiritual one. Even if we weren’t told about the new earth, we would have to deduce it, because physically resurrected bodies need somewhere physical to live.
You need to know you are made for a person and a place. Jesus is the person. Heaven is the place—not a ghostly place—but God’s central dwelling place, which he promises to relocate to the new earth.
But we are told about it!
Let’s look at future things in sequence. At the end of the age, after seven years of tribulation prophesied by the Apostle John, Christ returns and reigns on the earth for a thousand years, and Satan is thrown into the pit and kept for that entire time. The souls of those who had been martyred during the Great Tribulation came to life again and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The scriptures call this the “first resurrection.” After this 1,000-year period, Satan is released to try his hand at deception once more. We learn about this even in the Book of Revelation.
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. (Revelation 20: 1-6)
This is a wild thought, almost like a sci-fi movie. There will be two kinds of people on the earth during this age. First, there are regular people who will be born, live, and die, giving birth to children who repeat the process. Then, there are these resurrected saints who refused to take the mark of the beast. These are immortal beings with glorified bodies; they never die or show signs of aging. They serve the Lord Jesus as priests in His temple, and they will reign with Him for this period. And, the seat of the world’s government is found in Jerusalem, where Jesus rules over the earth. All in all, this is pretty wild stuff.
According to the Book of Revelation, at the end of the 1,000 years, Satan will be released from his prison for one last go at it. Satan gathers an army and marches on Jerusalem, but God destroys them all with a heavenly fire. The devil is cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, which ends the story for the great deceiver.
Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20: 7-10)
This is when the Great Judgment takes place. It is a frightful thought for those who are not securely found in Christ. The scriptures tell us that “if anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20: 15). But for the righteous, for those who have put their trust and hope in Jesus, there is life everlasting. The text from Revelation tells us that the “rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended” (Revelation 20: 5). So, here we are at the end of the thousand-year reign. And the rest of God’s people are given glorious, resurrected bodies.
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20: 11-15)
And now comes the new Heaven and the new Earth! It is here that we will find our eternal purpose.
Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:1-5)
In the parable of the ten minas, Jesus tells the story of the returning King who asked his servants to give account for the minas (money) they were given charge of.
“The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ “‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
The returning King, who is an image of Christ at His glorious return at the end of the age, said, “take charge of ten cities.” This parable tells us that God’s saints will participate in governing the new Earth when the new Heaven descends to the earth for all eternity. We will truly be given charge over cities, townships, regions, and states... if we have been faithful, that is, to the little he gave us in this current age. “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much (Luke 16:10).
There is hope in these words! For Christ is the hope of glory.
We should live in joyful expectation of the fullness of our transformation--soul and body—into the likeness of Christ. In the midst of suffering or in the face of hostility and persecution, we are sustained by the hope of a new heaven and earth, freed from Satan, evil, suffering, and death. Because we put our hope in God’s resurrection of our bodies, we should honor and care for it. We should refrain from any violence, disrespect, or sin that would harm, demean, or violate either our bodies or the bodies of others.

Daniel 12:1–3
“At that time Michael shall stand up,
The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;
And there shall be a time of trouble,
Such as never was since there was a nation,
Even to that time.
And at that time your people shall be delivered,
Every one who is found written in the book.
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,

1 Thessalonians 4:13–17
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. Revelation 20:11–15

Ezekiel 37:1–14

They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. 13 Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. 14 I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and performed it,” says the Lord.’ ”

Romans 6:5–14

1 Corinthians 6:9–20

Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 John 3:1–3
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
John 17:20–24

Revelation 7:9–17

Amen.”13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?” 14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them. 16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Revelation 21:22–22:5
22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the ]glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). 26 And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
CHAPTER 22
1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. 5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.
Psalm 21:1–7
The king shall have joy in Your strength, O Lord;
And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!

Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
2 Corinthians 4:16–5:11
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
CHAPTER 5
1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 11 Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.
Philippians 3:7–21
7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. 17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
1 Peter 1:3–9
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 5:6–11
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
